Susie’s Pretty & Pleasant Parlor

Please forgive our long overdue follow through on posting our “first one hundred subscribers” contest Room Reinvention. Our winner, Susannae, is really Susie, and she got her pictures and details to us right away. The delay is entirely our fault. Don’t hold it against us, please. OK, now enough with the apologies, let’s get to the good stuff. Here are Susie’s letter and the “before” pictures:

Dear Cameron & Lisa,

I’d LOVE some help with my living room. This is probably the least used room in our house. We mainly use it for holidays or for when I host Bunco or book club. Sometimes the kids or I will read in the green chair. I really like the loveseat and the yellow floral table. For new items, I’d like some new window treatments, but the room gets pretty dark, which is why I went with such a light color on the walls. I’d love some new accessories and stuff for the walls. For style, I really like French Country with some cottage style mixed in.  I like florals and lean more toward traditional taste. I think this room is considered more formal because it is connected to the dining room, but I don’t know that it has to feel that way. My dining room has a few nice pieces and nice drapes but the table is still casual and overall it doesn’t feel super elegant, which is fine.  My life isn’t really like that—my kids are messy, they can’t remember to take off their shoes, my dog sheds everywhere and chews things under the dining room table!!!  Fancy doesn’t really go with me these days, and I’m good with that. I would like the room to feel comfortable, pretty and pleasant. Thanks for your help.  Susie

Susie's Living Room Before

Susie's Living Room Before

Susie's Living Room Before

Susie, sister, we hear you about the messy kids and shedding dogs, and we love your honesty. Sounds like a dose of real life to us! You need a relaxing space for yourself to unwind that doubles as a grown up space where you can entertain friends. The good news is you’re already well on your way to creating that. So here are just a few final touches to pull this room together, making it the pretty and pleasant parlor a busy mom like you deserves. Read on for Susie’s mood board and it’s break down.

Susie's Pleasant & Pretty Parlor

1. Rarely do we not suggest paint for a Room Reinvention, but the pale yellow on Susie’s living room walls works well and looks fresh, so we are going to maintain her current palette of pale yellow, rose pink and sage green. These colors are lovely together and tie into the palette she has working so nicely in her adjoining dining room.

2.  One of Susie’s favorite pieces in her living room is the loveseat, and we agree. It has a great combination of color and pattern. We think Susie should hang this gorgeous mirror with a ribbon motif centered above the loveseat. Curvaceous and elegant, this golden beauty will fit right in with Susie and her stylish girlfriends.

3. Susie wants to allow for natural light in her living room, and we’re on board with that. She can frame and soften the three windows with these classic and feminine window treatments which will still allow for lots of light to filter in. The moire check brings a subtle and fresh pattern into the room and is in keeping with our color palette. To top off the window treatments, Susie can select the balloon fringed valance for a more billowy look (as featured on the moodboard), or she can opt for the lined and layered valance (shown here) in rose with green buttons for a more tailored look.

4. We love this tall statuesque bookcase as a place for Susie to display framed family photos, treasured heirlooms, books and accessories. It will look perfect on the right side of the loveseat and provide height and balance to that side of the room. With the loveseat now framed by the newly dressed up window on the left, the bookcase on the right and the mirror above, it will get the attention it deserves. Susie, if you need help arranging your goods on the bookshelf, read our post on that very topic right here.

5. This affordable pair of framed fern prints would look lovely hung between the two windows on the wall opposite the dining room. Their green color and botanical subject matter are a perfect complement to the florals and colors Susie already has working in this room.

6. Susie confessed that her current coffee table is a family heirloom (or is it a hairloom?) that she is ready to replace. We love how this oval coffee table works with the other wood finishes in the room. We also love the free shipping and price point on this baby. It’s solid stature is sure to withstand the roll of some Bunco dice.

7. This green vase made of recycled glass doubles as a candleholder. It is sandblasted with flowers and vines, so it complements our botanical mood perfectly and will look lovely on Susie’s new bookshelf or filled with flowers on her new coffee table.

8. It is our strong belief that every queen of the castle needs her throne, and this bergere chair suits Susie’s French Country parlor perfectly. It’s a cozy, elegant and comfortable way to bring more seating into the room. We recommend the walnut finish in the Abramo Tan pattern for it’s subtle, textured look. We’ll be the first to admit that this chair is a splurge, but we’re still frugal girls at heart, so we found a WAY less expensive version of this type of chair here. (Susie, if you can live with the fabric option available on this cheaper one, we say buy two!)

This is a great time to mention furniture placement and how to best use Susie’s existing pieces. As we mentioned above, with the new bookcase to the right of the loveseat, we suggest moving the round wood table to the left of the loveseat placing it in front of the window. (The trunk currently in this corner should find a home somewhere else in the house. It’s super cool looking, but doesn’t seem to work in this space.) Bring the table lamp (currently on the floral painted table) over and place it on the round wood table.  The floor lamp can stay to the right of the loveseat positioned about a foot out from the wall. We like the cozy reading nook Susie has created for herself (and her kids) in the corner. We suggest pulling the chair and ottoman out of that corner just a bit so it looks comfortably placed in front of the new curtains on the left window. If she can spare it, we think Susie should steal the lamp from the pretty desk in her dining room and use it as a reading lamp on the floral table. The floral table should stay put, centered between the two windows. Susie can pull out the ottoman from the reading chair and use it for extra seating when she’s having friends over.

9. These 20″ square silk Dupioni decorative pillows are a STEAL and will provide the final luxurious touch for Susie’s parlor. The solids in cranberry, sage and chablis will complement the loveseat throw pillows nicely. Susie can mix up the pillows on her loveseat, new chair and reading chair to bring the color and patterns throughout the room.

Susie, we sure do hope you are pretty pleased with your pretty new parlor. Nothing in there is too precious, so it’s still family friendly, but it finishes off the classy look you’ve started in your dining room.

And, if you’d like to pretty up a room of your own, sign up on our Room Reinventions page, and we’ll get your pretty party started.

Trim Trends: Go Gray! Yahoo Yellow!

Awhile back we posted about Choosing the Right White for Trim. It’s been one of our most popular posts. We promised a follow up on which whites trend yellow and which trend gray, so here it is.

First, let us reiterate that if you have a “fixed white” in your room, for example a tile, appliance or other white feature, please choose a white that is the closest match. I made this mistake in my kitchen and regret it every day. I had always heard that White Dove (BM OC-17) was the perfect white for trim and had used it with great success time and time again. I like its creaminess versus a stark cold white. So it was a no brainer when I needed to select a white for our kitchen cabinets. Of course, I went with White Dove. (To read more on that project, click here.) The problem did not present itself until we were hanging the cabinet doors between the new refrigerator and stove which are also white. These new appliances (our fixed whites), had bluish-gray undertones. It became obvious, especially at night, that the whites of the new appliances were not a match for the freshly painted White Dove cabinetry. Ugh! What to do?! Buy new appliances? No. Repaint the cabinetry? No way. Live with it and hope no one notices? Yes! That’s what we’re doing, so please don’t look too closely when you come over. Can you see the difference in this picture?

Kitchen

So, lesson learned. Now we know that if we want to go with a white that has more bluish, gray cool undertones, we should lean toward a trim color like Chantilly Lace OC-65 or White Diamond OC-61. If your walls are painted in rich, deeper hues, a trim color with warm yellow undertones such as Mayonnaise OC-85 or Cream Froth OC-97 would be excellent choices.

That’s not to say that popular trim colors like White Dove or perennial favorite, Cloud White OC-130, should not be options. They’re just not the right choices EVERY time. It’s worthwhile to find the right white for trim AFTER you’ve made other color decisions on finishes, walls, etc.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the options for “white”, or have trouble seeing the undertones, the best way to compare them is to put them side by side. When you have several whites together, it becomes clear right away which whites have cool vs. warm undertones as in the picture above.

If you’re still stumped, we’d LOVE to help you choose the right white. That’s what our Color Quandary page is all about, so skip on over.

Boutique of the Week: SMALLable

One of the many beautiful things about shopping online is that you can discover stores and make purchases worldwide without ever getting out of your pajamas. This scenario is quite nice for the mother who yearns to travel the globe furnishing her home in a stylish and perhaps even elegant fashion, yet in reality, struggles to find the time (and, dare we say, inclination) to cart the kids on that horrific journey to the local grocery store. Sound familiar? Perhaps you’ve seen her in the produce aisle.

For her and for you, we’ve discovered SMALLable. This French site (yet easily navigated en anglais) accesses over 100 brands from all over the world that are devoted to youngster style in both fashion and decor. Of course, shipping options will be pricier than say the “ship to store” option at Walmart, but here are some of our frugal faves, nonetheless.

Reader Reinvention: Bathroom Glamour

This bathroom had me at “Hello…Yellow.”

Yellow Bathroom

I discovered it at the home of our friends, Bill & Shirli. Their house is filled with gobs of creative energy, whimsical art, eclectic furnishings, and a friendly floor plan. Then it’s doused with the high octane levels of four kids and a collection of dogs and cats running about. To my kids, it’s a slice of heaven. To me, this bathroom is.

Yellow Bathroom

Bill, an avid DIYer, crafted the clean-lined black mirror frame and base cabinetry. Isn’t is cool how the  chunky white vessel sink cantilevers over the cabinets below?

The real show stopper for me is the wallpaper. The flowery plumes and the way the yellow pops against the black and white elements in the room bring a fluid and energetic vibe to the space.

It’s the perfect glam pit stop in this house of fun.

All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

That’s the magic of Kindergarten isn’t it? Check out what the kids in my son’s class did. They gussied up these plain pine chairs for their school’s Home Tour and Silent Auction.

KG chairs

Ok, they did have a little help, but this project was pretty easy. The hardest part was to make sure all 75 Kindergarteners got to participate!

First, we procured some simple pine kid-sized chairs and did a coat of primer. Then, we painted each chair the base colors, black for the boys’ chair and periwinkle for the girls. Both of these layers took seconds because we used spray paint.

Then, we were ready to get the kids involved. We taped off a checker board pattern so the boys could use white paint to make their checks. On the girls’ chair, we traced circles in multiple sizes and had the girls choose either light or dark pink, yellow or green to fill in a circle. Then back at home we “cleaned up” the checks and circles and embellished each chair with more patterns on the sides and backs. We also added finials we found on the cheap at Michael’s to give the chairs a whimsical look.

Kindergarten chairs

For the seat designs, my mother-in-law found some images online of the cheshire cat and tea party scenes from Alice in Wonderland. Because she’s a great artist, she copied the images right onto the seat freehand with a Sharpie, but if you’re not so artistically inclined, you could trace the images directly onto the chair. Then, it was simply a matter of filling in the lines with a few layers of acrylic paint.

Once the design was complete, we sprayed the chairs with a few layers of clear spray paint. This forms a protective layer between the paint and varnish and keeps the paint from smearing when the varnish is applied.

Girls' Chair

The last step was a final coat of Minwax water-based polycrilic protective finish, and this adorable couple is ready to be auctioned off to the highest bidder!

I’m Dreaming of a Fabulous Foyer Part 2: Tiling the Floor

Whenever I get a chance to sneak away for the weekend, I know that part of the price I’ll pay upon returning is a messy house. My husband is amazing in so many ways, but when it comes to cleaning up, I’m a team of one around here. So imagine my surprise when I returned home from a girls weekend in Virginia to find this…Mexican Tile Floor Demo

Yep, that’s my sweet little fella playing in the residue of our former foyer floor. Boys. Must. Get. Dirty. That dust he’s sitting in was blanketing the entire first floor of our house. Is wasn’t quite the mess I was expecting. Welcome home. Lovely. Was I steamed? Heck no! Because the floor used to look like this; I couldn’t have been happier to see it go.

Once the dust settled, (apparently that takes longer than a day because the dust was settling all week it seemed) we were ready to put in some new tile. My clever husband measured out the foyer space and then used twine and tape to replicate that space on the floor of our garage.

Twine Set Up

We chose a charcoal gray porcelain tile with an organic rust effect splashing through it. The idea was to pick up the charcoal gray in our kitchen countertops and work with the golden tones in our hardwood floors.

Using the garage floor template helped us to find the best layout and determine where we (er, I mean Steve) would be making the cuts on the tile saw. Once we got the pattern right, we borrowed the kids’ sidewalk chalk to number the tiles and show how they connected to each other.

Foyer Tile w/ Chalk

Then came the messy part: cutting, mortaring, cursing. Not pretty. I took pictures and that’s about it.

Mortar Mess

The next day was Monday, and Steve was had returned to the glory of his workplace so I was left to mix and apply the grout. It wasn’t so bad. Next time I’ll wear rubber gloves to protect my delicate ladylike hands, but I don’t have much wisdom to share beyond that. And after 24 hours of dry time during which the kids pretended the tiles were river stones and tip-toed over them to get to their bedrooms, we had a NEW FOYER FLOOR!

Finished Foyer Floor

Not the best picture, but hey, we’re not finished yet. Certainly without that orange and gold floor tile, our foyer is making progress on the road to fabulous.

The Easter Bunny Is Hopping Your Way

Yikes, where has March gone? And with Easter falling in early April this year, it’s likely to bite us in our big chocolate booty.

Image from cafepress.com

With the kids home for spring break this week, we’re looking for some easy and fun projects to do. Luckily, these just landed in my inbox. With a quick jaunt to our local crafts store, we’ll be able to knock some of these crafties out AND keep the little fingers busy for a few hours, bonus!

But first, a key point. Instead of hard boiling our eggs to decorate (which always results in broken shells and bizarrely veined eggs that no one wants to eat anyway), this year we’re going to follow this advice from Debra Steilen, Senior Holidays Editor at Better Homes & Gardens: “Eggs are easier to decorate if the shells are empty, so start by blowing out the contents. Use a long needle to prick a small hole on both ends of the egg. (Break the yolk with the needle to make it easier to extract.) Blow through one of the holes until the contents come out the other end.” My kids will LOVE this last part.
